I AM SERENE L

#IAMBEAUTIFUL Event

I am so touched and blessed that myself and Asta were kindly invited to have been involved in such an amazing event that happened earlier this week in association with Exorex & Satellite PR (Whom I’ve worked with before on my Sudocrem handbag essentials post)!

DSC_2425

The #IAMBEAUTIFUL Event focussed on the skin condition; Psoriasis, and focussed on the story of a brave Sufferer of the Skin Condition, Gorgia Lanuzza, aged 25.

Psoriasis affects between 2 – 3% of the UK population, and is characterised by red, flaky patches of skin covered with silvery scales. And in a world where perfection is everything, it can make the sufferer feel overwhelmed and lacking in confidence ‘

The #IAMBEAUTIFUL campaign is run in collaboration with Giorgia & Exorex to discuss and prove that the image of what social conventions have proven to find beautiful isn’t always what true beauty is and to challenge the norm in what beauty is & to show that people are only human and their skin conditions, imperfections and characteristics are all part of their identity and not things to be ashamed off, and in natural fact to prove that all of this is…. is true beauty!

The event focussed on a Seminar with Giorgia Lanuzza who discussed the true meaning of beauty & spoke about her battles with Psoriasis.

DSC_2429.jpgDSC_2436.jpgDSC_2431.jpg

‘ My psoriasis looks like red, raised spots, and I felt so self-conscious about the condition – that it was ruining my life,’ explains Giorgia. ‘ Finally I have come to terms with my skin and have realised that I am beautiful. I’m proud of my psoriasis as it reminds me that I’m strong.’ (Me & Gorgia photographed Above, confidently lifting her skirt up and revealing her Psoriasis! )

Having suffered from Eczema most of my childhood & teenage life I found this event very inspirational as it reminded me a lot about my past,  as for a long time in my younger years I always wanted to hide my self as my skin condition took over my arms, my legs, my under eyes, my neck & my ears. I always felt ashamed & was misunderstood. I used to feel so self conscious it always prevented me from dressing the way I wanted & was always covered up hiding my flaky, red skin! I then started accepting myself & my skin condition and even stopped feeling hard on myself as it was something I couldn’t control & let my self breathe! I realised that I wouldn’t let this control my life and since then I’ve been more content with myself and realised that my Eczema made me into the person I am today! …. As I’ve become an adult the skin condition has become more manageable and it only sometimes pops up around my neck area and under my eyes, but I control the rash with some creams that involves using Tropical Corticosteroid‘s which completely remove any signs of the Eczema!

The event also drew focus to Giorgia’s art with 97% of her body being covered in Psoriasis, she decided to create a body of self portraits in photograph form to represent her body  image and skin condition in a positive way & to challenge our perception on conventional beauty, and indeed she has done that, and proven that beauty is represented in everyone, and within their characteristics… because it makes us who we are, and that proves we are all beautiful in our individual and unique ways!

‘ For me, it’s photography,’ says Giorgia. ‘ Taking pictures enables me to continually appreciate the beautiful side of life, as well as washing away the everyday stresses of life. After years of feeling like psoriasis ruled my life, I have taken back control and can see that I Am Beautiful – and so are you.’

DSC_2441DSC_2453DSC_2443DSC_2450DSC_2469

‘ Psoriasis is a life-long condition, and many find coping with outbreaks to be hard. We hope hearing Giorgia’s story helps people to make peace with their condition: her positive attitude can be an inspiration to us all, whether we are affected by psoriasis or not. ‘ – Dawn Spiby – Exorex Brand Manager.

The event also drew focus on a talk with world Renowned Self Portrait artist and Photographer Brock Elbank that presented a portfolio of images that he has captured beautiful people from around the world that had freckles, named the #freckled project & showed beauty in a new light, and drew upon each subject’s characteristics & own individual achievements that people often miss when they look at someone, and draw stereotypes based on their first impressions. The project was aimed to show that everyone is beautiful, and that anyone can achieve what they want in life, and that the subjects of his portraits didn’t stop achieving what they wanted in life because they weren’t viewed as conventionally beautiful!

DSC_2396DSC_2405DSC_2412DSC_2416

The event also included a little seminar & talk with Mindfulness expert Suryacitta Malcolm Smith! The talk focussed on letting go of negative thoughts and being at one with yourself & involved a task that enabled all the participants to remain quiet for 2 minutes…. as we as humans are often distracted by things on a daily basis, and get lost in our daily routines, we often forget to take a little break and enjoy the little things in life.

DSC_2426.jpg

My Man Asta, really got involved in this part of the event and spoke about his views, and agreed with Smith’s teachings on people forgetting that beauty lies within the everyday, and that people miss that they need to be  more social and enjoy life more instead of being too wrapped up in their busy lives, that they lose out on life’s beauties, enjoying and spending time with your friends, family, loved ones and spreading love, care & kindness and just appreciating the little things in life!

*We also left the event with a thoughtful and generous gift box that body stated the I AM BEAUTIFUL quote on the front of the box, which myself & Asta loved! & the box included a lovely range of thoughtful presents including; A postcard with one of Giorgia’s self portrait images on the front, two cards stating I AM BEAUTIFUL & I AM STRONG.… Very motivational words! A Dept.Store for the mind – Notepad A Dept. Store for the mind – Simple reminder stickers that have a lovely range of common sense sayings that will help you through the day 🙂 , a beautiful set of Faber Castell colouring pencils (which I adore as it releases the inner artist within me)!!! A Kabloom – Grow your own Star Flowers which will grow a vivid blue edible star shaped flower anciently known as Borage, that is known to gladden the heart ❤ 🙂 !!! & a book named ‘ Happiness and How it happens: Finding Contentment through Mindfulness ‘ by speaker & writer Suracitta Malcolm Smith!

This sounds like a spectacular event! I love the fact you spoke out to us about your battles with Eczema & think Giorgia’s works are inspirational & do show her beauty, and she is spreading the correct message out into the world. Thanks Serene for opening my awareness to Psorisis & for this lovely post. I really enjoyed reading this. Xxx

    • Awww thanks so much Erika for your kind words and your support with this post. I hope this post will spread the message to more people that everyone is beautiful in their unique and natural forms and that you shouldn’t be ashamed of your characteristics as they make you into the wonderful, unique and beautiful person that you are :)! I agree with you, I admire Giorgia and her work, and love that she is spreading a positive message through to people proving she is in fact beautiful and inspiring many people around her that have insecurities about their Psoriasis or skin conditions… that are preventing them from being the person they want to be! xoxo

Such a lovely event & inspirational post. You’re both brave women yourself & Giorgia, Serene. Thanks for sharing with us about having Eczema, I used to have it too all over my arms & found out it came with the weather changes when it became really hot or really cold, so it always comes back from time to time, any advice you could give? And I will look up the cream you use for it x

    • Thanks so much Lisa, for the positive comments & kind words! I sometimes get the rash on my neck & do find it comes back with weather changes, especially when the weather is constantly changing in the UK. I’ve found that Lavender & Rose, and Bio- degradable washing powders, and soft wool irritates my skin, so possibly try avoiding those… Otherwise I really would recommend trying the cream I spoke about. It is a miracle worker & will reduce your Eczema :)! I hope that helps 🙂 & thanks so much for the words of support! ❤ xoxo

    • Thanks so much Ann-Marie 🙂 it was a very eye opening event… And did remind me to spread the message that it’s beautiful to be way you are….and that your Eczema or whatever it is you’re ashamed off is not something to dwell on, I think looking back at my childhood self, I could have been more free with myself & enjoy my childhood more & dress the way I wanted! Xox

  5. Such a powerful and beautiful post. I found it hard not to become emotional at these pictures and just burst with love! An amazing event and truly eye opening. Thank you for sharing Serene!!!

    • Thanks so much Liz, and for your support from this post :)! She is such a Brave individual to strip herself down in front of the camera and create art pieces… And it inspired me to open up about my Eczema too, thanks so much for reading sweetheart ❤ 🙂 xoxo

      • She really is brave and it’s important to share and speak out that we are not alone! And same goes for you! Two brave and beautiful ladies 🙂

      • And that makes 3 including you missy 🙂 <3! The term beauty is misused… And often misunderstood it's a shame 😦 cause I see beauty lying with everyone & everything! ❤ xoxo

  6. Such a lovely event and so important too! Xx

  7. I have eczema on my face and on my hands and I know it can be so awful and depressing! It looks like it was a great event x

    • I get it on my under eyes from time to time, and have to completely stop wearing makeup till it heals up! But even till this day I have lines under my eyes and a bit of redness, that I try and cover up with concealer! I hope you’ll find a cream that will work, please do try the cream I recommend it helped me out so much in my life! xoxo

  8. This sounds like such an empowering event, Serene! I think, though, that while the event was geared towards skin condition, the core message was to feel beautiful in your own skin despite of how “flawed” it is. I used to have eczema, but that’s under control now. The problem I had with embracing my own skin came from the myriad of scars that do not fade I obtained later on in life. I used to be so ashamed of them — using makeup, accessories and clothes to hide them — but eventually found a way to embrace them as a vital part of me that made me who I am today (scars all have stories, I earnestly believe.)

Loved the run down of the event! x

    MAY | http://WWW.THEMAYDEN.COM

    • It really was an empowering event 🙂 Thanks so much May for opening up about your past & battles with Eczema! You’re right …. Instead of being ashamed you finally let go of your insecurities and fully accepted yourself in the Brave and beautiful & unique way you are! You’re a brave & beautiful Individual May, and I’m glad the message is body confidence is positively being represented by you! & … Thanks so much for the kind & positive comments! This will influence a lot of people 🙂 in a good way I hope! As we are all beautiful with our flaws and all our quirks 🙂 xoxo

  9. Wow what an inspirational and strong lady! Events like this should be held more often to raise awareness as I think most people might be scared of it or even think the condition is contagious! Her pictures are beautiful and I hope other people see and feel so too. The Mindfulness training sounds perfect! I had the opportunity to get some training through work, so i’ve only been recently introduced to it, but it is a fascinating art and if you know how to control it, so powerfl to close off your mind from all the negativity that can surround us on a daily basis.

    • I agree with you Carolin, events like this need to happen more often & draw awareness to serious topics & focus on body image & bring in a more positive approach to the way women, men, people in general should view themselves more in a different way to show that everyone is beautiful 🙂 the mindfulness training was a treat & myself & Asta really enjoyed that part of the event!… We all need a bit more balance & mindfulness in our lives ! Xoxo
